Campaign of the Month: January 2012
Star Trek Late Night
The supernatural exists – it is everywhere, but most people never notice. It is known by many names – Sorcery, Psionics, the Force, and others. Some believe that the supernatural is nothing more than science; others believe it to be the wonders of religion or mythology. Regardless of belief system, the power of the supernatural can be seen, studied, and practiced by most people who have the willpower and desire to do so.
While there are many similarities – often these power bases are confused for one another – they all have very different applications and sources of energy: the Force draws on the energies of the universe; Psionics draw on the unused portions of the sentient mind; and Magic draws on extradimensional energies. Many belief systems will give the same name to two or perhaps all three powers bases; for example, ‘Chi’ was a name used on Earth to represent inner strength, but any manifestation of the supernatural was also called a manifestation of Chi.
There are three division of supernatural skills or powers:
All supernatural powers have both positive and negative aspects.
The Light Side teaches peace and harmony. It is the constructive side of the Force from which all love, understanding and knowledge originate — it is the essence of life. Those who are at peace with themselves can learn to harness their amazing potential.
The Dark Side plays counterpoint to the Light. Many young students falsely believe that the Dark Side is stronger than the Light — in truth, it is only easier. The Dark Side springs from the negative and destructive impulses of all living beings — anger, fear and hatred are its symptoms; death and war are the byproducts. It is dangerously seductive to those who lack the ability to control their emotions and passions. Those who give in to the Dark Side find their abilities greatly enhanced at first, but as time passes, the Dark Side demands more and more of those in its thrall.
For most beings the struggle between good and evil is not as powerful, not as compelling. For those attuned to the supernatural, the struggle of good versus evil, life versus death, is of utmost importance.
Those who learn the ways of Power must be careful to remember their own inner peace or they will surrender themselves to the Dark Side. They must be careful not to start down that seductive path, for its self-destructive ways are difficult to leave once embraced.
