Background: These Sebaceanoids inhabit the primitive planet Acquara. They were sent to the planet during the reign of Rygel X to expand the influence of the Hynerian Empire. The Acquarans were then abandoned on the planet, and Rygel X placed a device on the planet to drain all power and prevent the colonists from using technology.

The Acquarans have a ruling chief called the Grondeer and a religious caste known as priestens. The priestens have been the only ones able to read the sacred text called the Timbala, which is written in an ancient form of Hynerian. The text states the Acquarans’ true origins, but over the generations the priestens fabricated a religious myth to increase their own hold on power.

As a result, the people believed that their savior, the Masata, would come and take them away from Acquara. The priestens quoted the Timbala as saying that ‘by his hand’ the Masata (whose image was clearly Hynerian) would ‘rise up and lead us to the light’. The myth did prove to have a grain of truth when John Crichton pressed Rygel XVI’s hands onto palm indentations at the base of the Masata statue on the planet. It turned out that the statue was the energy-draining device, which recognized Rygel’s Hynerian palm prints. The statue broke apart, the device was deactivated, and powered mechanical devices such as Rygel’s throne sled started working again.

In Acquaran culture, only males may rule, but females choose their own mate. A female sharing a meal with a male is a sign of her interest in becoming a mated pair. If the Grondeer has no sons, his daughter’s mate will rule on his death.

A great honor in Acquaran culture is to be asked to sit next to the Grondeer and is usually reserved for his closest and most trusted friends and his greatest warriors and hunters.

The Acquarans still enjoy a simpler pace of life, but the return of power to run mechanical devices means they may be able to advance their technology if they so desire.
